Part II: The big numbers of ICT sector
Essentially what we will do here is to see four subsectors: the first one, which we will present right now, is the Mobile Communication sector, which is a subsector that, if you look at the global date, is the biggest one by far. It is around 13,500 million euros, therefore, it is an important part of invoicing of the year 2011. Even so, it is decreasing, more or less as how is decreasing the entire sector, by 4.1%. And maybe the holder (in order to choose a holder or an important fact) we say that there are almost 60 million of mobile lines including data cards and that they have produced in 2011 year about 5.6 million of portability. A data card is a date service not linked to a residential area. For example, some vending machines as what we have here in the university, don’t have only a SIM, they also have a GPRS modem that, what it does is to communicate to a data center about the invoicing, data about if a product is missing, etc. And thus, that vending machine which we have in the ground floor is a mobile data consumer.
The other number that I have said is the 5.6 million of portabilities. What is portability? When you change your mobile company, you can do it in two ways. One is “the hard way”, when you arrive to a new mobile company, they assign you a new mobile number and thus you lose your last mobile number and you have to communicate it in a convenient way. The other way is, if you want to keep your number but change the mobile company, changing the supplier, you make what it is called portability: you take your number from your company to another, so all your friends, friendships, familiars can keep calling you and they actually don’t realize that you had change from a company to another.
This is a key topic, because it was a topic that makes the Mobile Communication sector a very few competitive sector. When you became a new customer for a company, Vodafone for example, you will be all your life a Vodafone client for fear of losing the number that was even part of your identity. The Telecommunication Market Commission realized about it and what it has done is putting a lot of regulation in the last years, many norms, so the portabilities can be carried out in a few hours. Thus, the two companies, the two suppliers, have to agree; they can’t allege technical problems and in a few hours (24h, 48 h…) you should be able to make the portability.
This generates a lot of dynamism in the market (we will see it later): it produces almost 5.6 million, it means that almost a 10% of the lines, have changed their communication supplier.
(Second subsector), Internet-Broadband, which it is currently sell under ADSL, over fiber, over wire… we know some companies. This moves about 4,000 million euros, it has also decreased, but it is the sector that have decreased less (almost a 3%). And what we nowadays have is, more or less, 11 million lines of wideband and there had been an increase of 4.8% of the lines. How can be an increase of the lines and a decrease of the money? We can guess that the price of the wideband is decreasing and therefore, although we have an increase in the use, the traffic, the lines… we have a decrease of 3% in money, in invoicing.
(Third subsector) We have the Fixed Telephony, there has been a reduction of almost 350 thousand lines, and this represents a 9%. Therefore, it is a subsector that is clearly decreasing. People clearly support Mobile Communications and fixed lines just if they are essential. For example, if you have an Internet service linked to a wideband, then you maintain it. But the tendency is going down, as we will see later, since a long time ago.
And the last subsector we present is the Audiovisual Service sector. We understand for Audiovisual Service the diffusion and the signal retransmission of television and radio. It is 4,000 million euros; it is decreasing too, by 6.7%. We will see how the companies in order to loyalty the market (as we see that the market is clearly unfaithful: there are a lot of people who decide to change their company because they receive a better offer, a better mobile phone, etc.) they pack services, so you can easily take an decision and change your mobile company because they are offering you a very interesting thing; but if you have to decide to change your mobile company, your ADSL supplier and your pay-tv supplier, the decision is much more difficult, more slowly. And this is, therefore, one of the strategies, as we will see, that companies follow nowadays.
